Lost - you lost me please explain the plot?

Well, the initial plot of the first season was to have someone die each episode, like a 'Survivor' kind of deal (that's why the first season was so good), but then they decided to draw it out as long as possible because the ratings were really good. I'm not actually sure of the plot, but I'm guessing it was to escape from the island?
