Why did the Jews choose the star of David to represent Israel and it's religion?

The Star of David is a symbol of King David's shield, is this not the shield that defended him at war? I agree that he was a remarkable individual, but why didn't the Jews use a Symbol that represents it's origin, or something to do with Moses and receiving the ten commandments?
