What could cause sudden, severe joint pain and stiffness?

I had my thumb do that when I tried to bend it it clicked back straight and it hurt. I found out it was called trigger finger. I had to have surgery on it. The only other thought I have it could be carpal tunnel/ Either way you need to see a Dr.
